The Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research was established in 2004 with the generous support of Lowell and Jan Steinbrenner to change the way the world thinks and acts about the environment. The institute advances environmental education and research at Carnegie Mellon in many ways including fellowship, grants, and sustainable and research initiates.
The Institute for Green Science (IGS) at Carnegie Mellon University is a research, education and development center pursuing a holistic approach to sustainability science focused in the third of three major problem areas where green chemists can make major contributions to sustainability: 1. solar technologies 2. chemical feed stocks from renewable sources 3. pollution reduction.

CEINT @ Carnegie Mellon is an interdisciplinary center within ICES. Their vision is to elucidate the relationship between the vast array of nanomaterials and properties to their environmental and human health risks. Graduate students and faculty from seven different departments study the occurrences, transport, transformations, fate, and toxicity of engineered nanomaterials in the environment, aiming to understand their potential environmental exposure, biological effects, and ecological consequences.

Members of the Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies (CAPS) are recognized internationally as leaders in the study of air quality and atmospheric chemistry. Their unifying theme is the behavior of particulate matter in the atmosphere, including emissions, formation, transformation and deposition of particles as well as their climatological and health effects.

The Western Pennsylvania Brownfields Center provides access to information and research on previous development efforts, education programs for professional practitioners and academics in the field, and site-specific workshops that bring together national experts and local stakeholders to strategize comprehensive development initiatives for municipalities and small business owners. |
Peer Health Advocates offer a variety of fun and informative health education programs that include nutrition, sex health, and stress management.
The Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) is an urban design research center in the School of Architecture. It conducts international research in place-making, citizen participation planning processes, and sustainable development. |
The Center Climate and Energy Decision Making is a research cooperative agreement between CMU and the National Science Foundation and develops and promulgates new and innovative, behaviorally and technically informed insights involving the intersection points between climate and energy. It also generates methods to frame, analyze, and assist key stakeholders in addressing important decisions regarding climate change and the necessary transformation of the world’s energy system.”

The goal of the Center for Water Quality in Urban Environmental Systems (Water-Quest) is to advance the scientific basis for management of inputs and inventories of contaminants in urban watersheds. Water-Quest will involve several critical components: 1. research on environmental sources and fate of contaminants in urban systems, 2. monitoring and modeling , 3. development of technologies and modeling tools for improved management of water quality in urban systems, and (4) outreach and education..
