Sustainability House
The CMU Sustainability House is an experiential learning experience dedicated to sustainability and environmentally conscious living in the campus community. This house community provides an opportunity for you to live and connect with students who share similar interests, academic and personal goals. This community capitalizes on our students' concerns and passions for the environment and sustainability. This initiative works in collaboration with student organizations and campus and community environmental resources in order to enhance peer-to-peer learning about sustainability. If you are ready to take the next step in promoting positive environmental community awareness and change on the Carnegie Mellon campus and beyond, then the Sustainability House is for you.

Some things we're doing that we think you should do too!
Dishwasher
A dishwasher uses only half the energy, one-sixth of the water, and less soap than hand-washing an identical set of dirty dishes. Even the most sparing and careful washers could not beat the modern dishwasher. If you have a dishwasher, use it! You don't wanna waste water an energy though so run it when it's fully loaded.
Tap Aerators
Inexpensive and simple to install, low-flow faucet aerators can reduce your water consumption as much as 50%, and reduce the energy cost of heating the water also by as much as 50%. Screw them in and done, watch that water conservation.
Dorm Composting
CMU has many compost dumpsters as well as compostable containers served at different eateries around campus. Keeping a dorm-side compost is good and fairly easy. You can end up responsibly reducing the trash you make, and turning your food waste into healthy soil.
Recycling
Recycling is a given. Know what can and cannot be recycled on campus and encourage that little blue bin to be an earth champion.
Turning Light Switches off
FMS can provide you with stickers that very conveniently go over light switches and very subtly said something like "Hey, turn off the light when you leave, duh!!" Turning off lights you are not using can actually have a greater impact than you think.
Communal Kitchen
The only thing disposable is your sleep when you have that big assignment due, nothing else has to be! Share washable plates, cups, and utensils. Also coming together for a meal with your residents and friends can (surprise!) nourish good conversations and strengthen positive relationships.
Organic Food
Do you know how satisfying going to Whole Foods or Trader Joes is? Have you ever visited a farmers market or a food co-op? Let's just say that local and organic food makes us feel good and tastes great!
